The Armor God Supplies for the Christian, Part 2 (Pilgrim’s Progress According to the Bible #16)

https://vimeo.com/112664193

TEXT: Ephesians 6:10-18

There is an evil-looking reptile known as the hog nosed snake which attempts to fool predators with two ruses. First, it impersonates a pit viper, by coiling, striking, and hissing viciously. If this tactic fails to intimidate the attacker, the hog-nosed snake turns belly up, opens its mouth and rolls out its tongue, playing dead. If it is picked up and placed right side up, it simply turns over and resumes the death ruse again.

Scripture likens the devil to a cunning serpent who has numerous tricks up his sleeve — the Bible calls them the wiles of the devil. And, in this series, we are exploring the Scriptural command to be aware of and to be wary of the tricks of our spiritual enemy, the devil. Continue reading

What You Need to Know About Satan, Part 3 (Onward Christian Soldiers #58)

https://vimeo.com/112671638

Isaiah 14:13-14: “For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High.”

In part one of this lesson, we asked the question: Where did Satan come from? According to the Bible, Satan was originally created as an angel named Lucifer. Lucifer was beautiful, wise, and powerful, and he had a position of leadership in Heaven before he was cast out because of his sin against God. Continue reading

Praying Through the Bible #115

TEXT: Matthew 5:43-48

At the beginning of this week, the world was shocked and appalled by the vicious terror attack on a synagogue in Jerusalem that left 5 people dead and 7 others wounded. If we put ourselves in the shoes of the Jews and Palestinians, we might begin to imagine how centuries of hatred and animosity between the two people groups have built up to the ongoing conflict that we see happening in Israel today. It is in a similar era of conflict and animosity that Jesus Christ gave His command to love and pray for our enemies. Continue reading

What You Need to Know About Satan, Part 2 (Onward Christian Soldiers #57)

Isaiah 14:13-14: “For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High.”

In our last lesson, we asked the question: Where did Satan come from? According to the Bible, we learn that Satan was originally created as an angel named Lucifer. Lucifer was beautiful, wise, and powerful, and he had a position of leadership in Heaven. That, of course, was before he rebelled against God.

Today, we are going to answer the question: What was Lucifer’s sin? Continue reading

The Armor God Supplies for the Christian, Part 1 (Pilgrim’s Progress According to the Bible #15)

TEXT: Ephesians 6:10-18

Those of you who have been with us since the beginning of this series know that we are using the classic Christian allegory, Pilgrim’s Progress by John Bunyan, as a helpful guide to aid us in grasping some of the truths of the Christian life. As you know, a story has a way of grabbing people’s attention and demonstrating things better. We are all familiar with the parables of the Master Storyteller, Jesus Christ, and it has been said that storytelling, like any other form of art, has a way of connecting us with the spiritual realm. The philosopher Rudolf Steiner once said, “Art is the daughter of the divine.” Continue reading

Why We Ought to Pray for Our Enemies (Part 2)

Praying Through the Bible #114

TEXT: Matthew 5:43-48

Allow me to begin by sharing with you a quote by Matthew Henry on this important text: He said,”The Jewish teachers by ‘neighbor’ understood only those who were of their own country, nation, and religion, whom they were pleased to look upon as their friends. The Lord Jesus teaches that we must do all the real kindness we can to all, especially to their souls. We must pray for them. While many will render good for good, we must render good for evil; and this will speak a nobler principle than most men act by. Others salute their brethren, and embrace those of their own party, and way, and opinion, but we must not so confine our respect. It is the duty of Christians to desire, and aim at, and press towards perfection in grace and holiness. And therein we must study to conform ourselves to the example of our heavenly Father. Surely more is to be expected from the followers of Christ than from others; surely more will be found in them than in others. Let us beg of God to enable us to prove ourselves his children.” Continue reading

Why We Ought to Pray for Our Enemies (Part 1)

Praying Through the Bible #113

TEXT: Matthew 5:43-47

In the year 1818, Tamatoe, the king of a tribe of one of the South Sea Islands, became a Christian. Some other members of his tribe became Christians as well. Soon thereafter, he discovered a plot among his fellow natives to capture him and the other converts and burn them to death. In response, he organized a band to attack the plotters. When he captured them, however, he set a feast before them. This unexpected kindness surprised the savages so much that they burned their idols and became Christians. Continue reading

What You Need to Know About Satan, Part 1 (Onward Christian Soldiers #56)

https://vimeo.com/111391584

Isaiah 14:13-14: “For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High.”

The Bible tells us that, before the creation of Adam and Eve, there was in the universe a being who had rebelled against God, his Creator. This being is called Satan or the Devil. Satan is not just an influence for evil. He is not a red demon with a pitchfork as he is often pictured. He is a very real being.

Where did Satan come from? Continue reading
